Sunnyside Municipal Airport
The 07/25 Runway Rehabilitation and Taxiway Reconstruction Improvements is the largest single effort to rehabilitate and replace aging infrastructure at the Sunnyside Municipal Airport (Airport). The Airport is located in Sunnyside and is solely owned by the City of Sunnyside. Project planning started in 2013 with the development of the 5-year Capital Improvement Program. Funding to complete design was secured in 2015, and construction funding in 2017. The project is currently under construction.
This important airport project will rehabilitate the runway and reconstruct the parallel taxiway to increase the runway-taxiway separation distance to meet Airplane Design Group II requirements. The Airport is solely a general aviation airport and funding through the Airport Improvement Program is difficult since improvements at GA airports are lower priority than commercial service airports. Typically, larger projects require additional resources above entitlement funds and must compete with other airports to secure discretionary funds.
HLA provided initial cost estimates and performed all work necessary to secure funding such as the FAA Grant Application, WSDOT Grant Application, and also participated in Joint Planning Committee meetings. HLA facilitated several presentations to the City Council, the Airport Advisory Board, and Airport tenants to understand the needs of the Airport. During construction, HLA is providing construction administration and observation, including conducting weekly safety and construction meetings, and coordination with the FAA. This project is expected to be a valued asset to the aviation community and the City of Sunnyside.
